BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD

Educating & Engaging

January 2018

When sick or injured, it can be difficult to know exactly where to go for care. Time and cost are important considerations but understanding your options is not always straightforward. The goal of the redesign of the Choose your Costs and Care site was to educate Blue Cross insurance policy holders about their options for receiving care. The main deliverable was an interactive component that would help users make an informed decision.

Designing for Accessiblity

A bright and engaging use of color was a key requirement of the redesign, but just as important was ensuring that the site be accessible for those with vision impairment and other disabilities. I used color to indicate the level of urgency for each care option, beginning with violet for the Nurseline and ending with red for the ER. To visually reinforce the design and ensure it would be accessible for color blind users, I used iconography in addition to color to denote the different care options.Furthermore, color combinations were tested to ensure sufficient contrast for users with low vision.

Optimized for Mobile

Another key requirement of the redesign was ensuring the experience would translate seamlessly to mobile. The interactive component was to remain the centerpiece of the design but needed to be modified for the mobile environment. This solution accomplishes both aims: it compresses the interactive section for easy reading while retaining all essential content.

Results

Health care can be a dry topic without the correct approach; by using color and iconography playfully, as well as incorporating interaction and dynamic visual elements to enhance engagement, the Choose your Costs and Care site educates insurance policy holders about their care options while providing a delightful user experience.
